The Memory Keeper’s Daughter (19)

Title: The Memory Keeper’s Daughter
Author: Kim Edwards
Genre: Fiction
An impossibly sad story about a husband trying to save his wife a world of pain by letting her believe her daughter has died immediately after birth instead of dealing with a child who has Down Syndrome. The book left me cold though because I always just thought of the husband as cruel. On the surface I could understand his motivations and intent but I just found him to be cruel and hurtful. When the main charcter doesn’t have a single redeeming quality it’s hard for me to love a book. That was the case here.

I’m Not the New Me (18)

Title: I’m Not the New Me
Author: Wendy McClure
Genre: Memoir
Part weight loss narrative, part bad luck with love story, part “I’m much more witty than the rest of the world” snark piece, it just wasn’t my cup of tea. I wanted to like it much more than I did. It was very highly recommended to me and I had high hopes. The author isn’t a bad writer and the book itself isn’t “bad.” It’s more that the author’s style of storytelling just doesn’t do it for me. I should have known this since I’ve tried to read her blog on several occasions (again based on recommendations) but I’ve never been able to get into it.
