In the Woods (38)

Title: In the Woods
Author: Tana French
Genre: Fiction

I’m not much a fan of mystery novels so you surely will believe how good this book is when I tell you that I absolutely can’t wait to read the author’s second novel featuring some of the same characters from this book, a mystery novel.

Tight prose, interesting characters, mysteries within mysteries, not taking itself too seriously are all reasons this book kept me interested and entertained much more than mysteries normally do.

When You Are Engulfed in Flames (37)

Title: When You Are Engulfed in Flames
Author: David Sedaris
Genre: (mostly) Non-Fiction

It makes me a little sad to say that I’ve basically enjoyed each David Sedaris book since Holidays on Ice a little less than the previous one. You do the math and figure out how much I enjoyed this one.

Then We Came to the End (36)

Title: Then We Came to the End
Author: Joshua Ferris
Genre: Fiction

So apparently everyone in the world really loves this book. I do not.

I can see why people like it because it taps into a lot of the soul crushing realities of working in a corporate environment, even a “creative” corporate environment. It amplifies the absurdities of corporate policies. It is heartbreakingly accurate about how people often treat each other in these environments and how, no matter how much the environment sucks, people can’t or won’t leave. Though I haven’t been in the corporate environment for a couple years perhaps it’s all a little too fresh in my mind for me to see the humor in all of that. Instead it just made me sad. I had to force myself to slog through it because I really just wanted to quit reading it in the middle. But I finished! I now want a cookie for the effort.
