Author: Matthue Roth
Genre: Non-Fiction, Memoir

5 or 6 months ago my rebbetzin asked me if I would organize a class or reading group at shul. She knows what a voracious reader I am and how much of the stuff I read relates to Judaism in some way. So I came up with an idea for “Not Your Bubbe’s Bookclub.” Part curated reading list, part book club, I’m trying to bring some new ideas and new styles of literature into the shul. At the first meeting I presenting the class with three potential tracks to kick off with. The class unanimously chose the “Tradition Transformed” track which consists of Yom Kippur A Go-Go, Yentyl’s Revenge and The Big Kahn.

We started with Yom Kippur A Go-Go and I am so nervous to find out tomorrow night what the small group thought of this book. I loved it but there are some actually Bubbes in this group and I was blushing just thinking about them because of Roth’s liberal use of “fuck”, his no holds barred descriptions of a friend’s sex toys and all the debauchery he encountered while living the life of an Orthodox Jew he was also a wild-child poet in San Francisco in the early part of the last decade.

What I really want to get into with our discussion tomorrow night is how much room in the Jewish tradition there is for individuality and individual paths and how to navigate those paths to stay close to the heart of our tradition while being true to ourselves. Without any judgement of Roth I say that his self-identity as an Orthodox Jew and his very strict observance of shabbat and kashrut coupled with a lack of any real discussion of any outward manifestations of Jewish ethics was confusing to me. But that’s good because it’s given me a lot to think about.

I’m pretty nervous about the discussion tomorrow night. I can only hope that the Bubbe’s got past the language and talk of trannies and dry humping enough to let the book make them about some big questions as well.

This is a mystery that isn't a traditional mystery at all. I suspect that's one of the reasons I liked it so much. Several mystery situations arise (murders, disappearances, etc) but they aren't dealt with in a traditional mystery format and there is no real crime and punishment ending that ties up loose ends. Highly recommended, a very enjoyable book.

Author: Kate Atkinson
Genre: Fiction
I suggested this book to my former book club because some members had really wanted to read a mystery. I don’t like mysteries much but it’s good to have diverse selections for a book club. Turns out this isn’t much of a traditional mystery at all, I suspect that’s one of the main reasons I liked it so much. Several mystery situations arise (murders, disappearances, etc) but they aren’t dealt with in a traditional mystery format and there is no real crime and punishment ending that ties up loose ends. I enjoyed the writer’s narrative style and prose very much and was genuinely surprised by a few twists (and I wasn’t disappointed with the twists I saw coming a mile away). There was one recurring theme in the book that I wasn’t terribly fond of but overall it didn’t take away from my enjoyment. Highly recommended, a very enjoyable book.

Author: Tracy Quan
Genre: Fiction
I first read this book when it was published in the summer of 2001 and enjoyed it very much. Salon.com pre-published a few chapters from it and I was hooked. I’ve been running a book club for almost a year now and at our last meeting a few members mentioned wanting to read something more “adventurous” and unexpected. This book came to mind. Everyone was pretty game for it. I remembered the basic plot but had forgotten just exactly how sexually explicit it was and what the writing was like. I can safely say though that I enjoyed it this time just as much. It’s fun, silly, and some plot points are highly implausible but I didn’t mind at all.
Highly recommended for readers who don’t mind explicit sexual talk in books and oh yeah, and who don’t mind the obvious topic of prostitution.
My book club meets on Tuesday and I can’t wait to see what the other members thought of it. I’ve heard from one who loved it (she was one who clamoring for something more adventurous) but there are a few slightly more modest members and I can’t wait to hear them talk about this book.
